Dial-Up Networking Connectoid Displays Non-Existent Device

SYMPTOMS

After you install a new modem driver, your connection attempt may be unsuccessful.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when a non-existent modem is displayed in the Dial-Up Networking (DUN) connectoid properties.

If you create a connection and then delete the modem, the settings for the connection are retained by keeping the modem in the connectoid. This facilitates docking and undocking of laptops without having to reconfigure the settings. Most settings are per modem, so removing the old modem forces the user to reconfigure the modem if it is reinstalled later.

By default, the modem that is originally assigned to the DUN connection is selected. If this modem is removed, the connection is unsuccessful.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:

1. Right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.



2. Right-click your DUN connection, and then click Properties.



3. In the Connect Using area, click to clear the check box next to the old modem, and then click to select the check box next to the new modem.



4. Click OK.

This behavior is by design.
