Multiple Copies of Txtsetup.sif File Used During Windows 2000 Setup

ID: Q227940

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

During the text-mode portion of Windows 2000 setup, the Txtsetup.sif file is placed in three locations on the hard disk:

  • C:\Txtsetup.sif
  • C:\$win_nt$.~ls\Txtsetup.sif
  • C:\$win_nt$\~bt\Txtsetup.sif
This file contains information used for the installation.

CAUSE

Setup uses all three copies of the Txtsetup.sif file during various parts of the installation process. The files do not remain on the computer after Setup is finished.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Note that drive C may not always contain all three copies of the file, depending on the location in which Windows 2000 Setup writes temporary files. This is usually the partition with the greatest amount of free space.
