Cannot Specify a Video Mode During Windows 2000 Setup

SYMPTOMS

While you are installing Windows 2000, you may encounter a loop during GUI-mode Setup at the video-mode selection screen.

When you choose a video mode at this screen, you may receive an error message and be prompted to select another mode. You are then returned to the video-mode selection screen. None of the available settings may work and there is no way to bypass the error message and continue.

CAUSE

Windows 2000 Setup prompts you for video settings only when it cannot detect the type of video adapter installed. When this occurs, Setup loads the standard VGA video driver, which supports only 16 or 256 colors.

Some video adapters, such as the Intergraph 3400 video adapter, do not run properly in 16-color mode or 256-color mode.

RESOLUTION

To finish Windows 2000 Setup, replace the video adapter with a supported video adapter that is listed on the Windows 2000 Hardware Compatibility List (HCL), and then start Setup again.
