"Add New Hardware" Error Message During Windows 2000 Logon

SYMPTOMS

When you log on to a Windows 2000-based computer without using the Administrator account, the following error message may appear:

Add New Hardware
You must log on as Administrator to configure this new device
This error message may appear even when new hardware has not been added to the computer.


RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, restart the computer and log on using the local Administrator account and password.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
