America Online 4.0 Cannot Establish Modem Connection in Windows 2000

ID: Q228086

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 to Windows 2000, America Online (AOL) 4.0 cannot establish a modem connection. When you attempt to connect to AOL using a modem, you experience an endless string of redials because of unsuccessful connections. You receive an "Unable to initialize modem" message, AOL dials and begins a carrier signal, and then hangs up. The status bar displays "Unable to make a connection."

Connections over TCP/IP work correctly.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because AOL installs its own network adapter, which is a .vxd file. This does not work with Windows 2000.
