ID: Q228152

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When your Windows 2000-based computer returns from Hibernate mode, you may not be prompted for a password.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Prompt for password when computer goes off standby option is not selected.

RESOLUTION

The option to prompt for a password when the computer goes off Standby mode also controls password prompting for returning from Hibernate mode. To select this option:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Power Options.

  3. On the Advanced tab, click to select the Prompt for password when computer goes off standby check box.

  4. Click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

The password used for returning from Standby or Hibernate mode is the password of the user who placed the computer in Standby or Hibernate mode.

Note that selecting the option to turn off the monitor after a specified period of time is independent of Standby or Hibernate mode. Turning off the monitor using this feature does not prompt you for a password when the monitor is turned on again.
