Unable to Playback DVD Video on a Windows 2000-Based Computer

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to play video from a DVD on a Windows 2000-based computer, you may receive the following error message:

While setting up DVD-video playback, it was found that
*Video cannot be shown on the computer monitor because of one of the following reasons:
  1. Low video memory. Please try using lower display resolution and/or colors.


  2. Another application is currently using the necessary display resources. Please ensure that no such application is running.


  3. The display adapter in incompatible with the DVD decoder. Please try to obtain a display driver update.



CAUSE

This issue can occur for either of the following reasons:

  • Low video memory.


  • Another program is currently using the necessary display resources.


  • You are using a legacy video adapter.


  • The video driver manufacturer has decided not to support DVD.



RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

  • Try using a lower display resolution or a lower number of colors.


  • Close other programs that may be using the necessary display resources.


  • Use a Windows 2000 compatible video adapter.



MORE INFORMATION

Below is a list of the components necessary for DVD playback on a Windows 2000-based computer using the included software:

Analog Decoding

  • A DVD-ROM drive.


  • A supported analog DVD decoder.


  • A video driver that answers TV/Out Input/Output Control (IOCTL) = NO, which disallows copy protection.


All Other Decoding

  • A DVD-ROM drive.


  • A supported DVD decoder with hardware decoding, such as a Cinemaster 3.0 card, or software, such as Mediamatics.


  • A video driver that supports copy protection for encrypted disk playback, and VPE to permit the video card to place the image in the frame buffer.


This is a known issue with the following legacy video drivers, as they do not support VPE: Imagine, ATI, Cirrus, Qvision, WeitekP9, W32/ET6000, Revolution3D, Matrox, Elsa, C&TLegacy, and Banshee.

Legacy is defined as non-Windows 2000 drivers.
