  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use a Dvorak keyboard to configure Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 during the Text-mode Setup process, you may not be able to create, change, or delete a partition using the required keys.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Dvorak keyboard is mapped and laid out differently from the default US-101 keyboard that Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 use for the Setup process.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, refer to the following table when the Setup program requires you to press a key. Substitute the required key from the Dvorak keyboard column with the key from the US-101 column. For example, to create a new partition, you must press C. When you create a partition using a Dvorak keyboard, you press J to imitate a C key from a US-101 keyboard.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

You can use this method with a Dvorak keyboard to proceed with the Text-mode portion of the Setup process. Near the end of the Text-mode portion of Setup, you can specify the kind of keyboard you are using. After the computer restarts and begins the graphical user interface (GUI) portion of Setup, the keyboard should function correctly. You may encounter incorrect key mapping on the Dvorak keyboard during the following portions of Setup:

  • On the initial Setup screen, Setup prompts you to press R to recover or repair an existing installation.

  • When you need to specify an additional device, you must press S.

  • When you are converting a partition to the NTFS file system, you are prompted to press C to convert the partition.

  • When you install another operating system on the same computer, you may need to press the N to install the new software to a new folder.

  • When you create, delete, or change a partition, Setup prompts you to press C to confirm.
