ID: Q228350

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you click the Windows logo key on the keyboard console of the On-Screen Keyboard program (Osk.exe) to display the Start menu, you may start the Shut Down menu instead. You may see the above symptom if your computer is configured as follows:

  • Your screen resolution setting is 640 X 480 and the Windows logo key on the On-Screen Keyboard console is positioned in the same place as the Shutdown menu option.

  • At higher screen resolution settings, you reposition the On-Screen Keyboard console such that the Windows logo key is in the overlay path of the Start menu.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the On-Screen Keyboard console is displayed on your monitor in such a position that it is overlaid in the path of the Start menu. When you click the Windows logo key on the left side of the on-screen keyboard console, the program is active and waiting for the next keystroke. However, when you click the mouse button, the Start menu is selected, and the Shut Down command is run.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem:

  • Reposition the On-Screen Keyboard console so that it is not in the overlay path of the Start menu.

  • -or-

  • If you are using the 640 X 480 screen resolution setting, press the right Windows logo key on your computer's keyboard.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

Move the pointer over the Start menu, and then press and hold the mouse button. Point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then point to Notepad. Release the mouse button. You have just started the program with one full mouse click.

The On-Screen Keyboard program (Osk.exe) behaves this way because the Start button works on a press and hold basis. When you click and release the On-Screen Keyboard Windows logo button then click again, the Start menu is selected with the Shut down command highlighted, and the second click runs the Shut down command.
