Administrative Tools Shortcuts in Control Panel Can Be Deleted

ID: Q228438

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

You can right-click an icon within the Administrative Tools folder in Control Panel and then click Delete to delete the icon. When you do so, you are prompted for confirmation. If you confirm the deletion, the shortcut is sent to the Recycle Bin.

CAUSE

The Administrative Tools folder in Control Panel is a normal folder. The icons in the Administrative Tools folder are simply shortcuts to the actual programs.

This may be confusing because you cannot delete items in Control Panel in earlier versions of Windows.

RESOLUTION

If you delete a shortcut, double-click Recycle Bin on the desktop to open it, click the deleted shortcut, and then click Restore on the File menu to restore it.

If the shortcut is no longer in Recycle Bin, you can re-create the shortcut in the Administrative Tools folder. The shortcuts in the Administrative Tools folder are listed below.
