Certificate Manager Error Message When no Certificate Specified

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start the Certificate Manager tool by typing certmgr.msc in the Run box and then pressing ENTER, you may receive the following error message:

The system cannot find the file specified.
Also, if you click Find Certificates on the Action menu in Certificate Manager, you may receive the same error message.


CAUSE

This problem can occur if you try to use Certificate Manager without specifying a certificate file to view.

NOTE: Also, you should not try to start Certificate Manager from a command prompt or the Run box.


RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, start Certificate Manager normally, and then specify a certificate file to view.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
