Smart Card Reader Does Not Communicate on Multi-Serial Port Device

ID: Q228822

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

SYMPTOMS

When you install a serial smart card reader on a multi-serial port device, the reader may not function. However, the reader works correctly when it is connected to a serial port on the motherboard.

CAUSE

This behavior is usually caused by a multi-serial port device not supporting a Received Line Signal Detector (RLSD) line, which the smart card reader may use to detect smart card insertions and removals.

To verify this, plug the reader directly into the serial port on the computer.

RESOLUTION

If plugging the reader directly into the serial port on the computer works, either use this configuration or upgrade to a newer multi-port device or reader.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

You may also want to check with the manufacturer of the multi-port device or smart card reader for any other possible workarounds.
