CSNW Does Not Allow Alternate Credentials in the CSNW Tool in Control Panel

SYMPTOMS

The Client Service for NetWare service (CSNW) provides for pass-through authentication to NetWare during logon. However, for this to work, the credentials (the user name and password) for Windows 2000 and NetWare must be identical.

The Preferred Server or Default Tree and Context parameters for NetWare are specified in the CSNW tool in Control Panel for the currently logged on user; this configuration is saved on a per-user basis. The CSNW tool in Control Panel does not provide the ability to specify a user name and password for NetWare that is different from the Windows 2000 credentials for the currently logged on user.

RESOLUTION

You can specify alternate credentials (after logging on) with CSNW by mapping a network drive to a NetWare resource in My Computer or Windows Explorer, or by using the NET USE command.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
