No Event Log Replication on Cluster Servers

ID: Q229071

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

SYMPTOMS

Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Datacenter Server include a feature known as Event Log Replication. Event Log Replication replicates events from each node in a Cluster Server to the other nodes. When an event is logged to the event log of any given node, it is also replicated to the other nodes. This feature can make troubleshooting easier by allowing the events for the entire cluster to be viewed from a single member of the cluster.

Under certain circumstances, events may not be replicated to the other nodes in the cluster.

CAUSE

There are two reasons for Event Log Replication not to work:

  • Event Log Replication for one or more node in the cluster, or for the entire cluster, is disabled.

  • One or more cluster node is down or has experienced a failure, preventing Event Log Replication from taking place.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, the conditions noted in the "Cause" section above must be resolved.

NOTE: When you resolve the problem replication starts again, but there is no mechanism to replicate previous events.

When you are using the event logs in a clustered environment for troubleshooting, it is good idea to examine the log for all nodes in the cluster if a condition that may have caused Event Log Replication not to work is suspected.

For the first condition above, in which Event Log Replication is disabled, enable replication. Note that Event Log Replication is enabled by default. For this reason, it is unlikely to be the cause of the problem unless Event Log Replication has been specifically disabled.

In the second case, use normal Cluster Server troubleshooting procedures to resolve the difficulty. The fact that replication is not occurring may be an indication of a network problem or a problem in communication between the nodes of the cluster.
