SYMPTOMS

When you try to expand a folder tree on a remote Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based computer using Microsoft Management Console (MMC), you may receive the following error message:

The connection to [servername] could not be established. Check to see that you have sufficient permission to access the Windows Management Instrumentation and that the Windows Management Instrumentation service is started on the computer.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Windows NT 4.0-based computer does not have Microsoft Windows Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install WBEM. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Windows NT 4.0-based computer, insert the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

  2. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.

  3. In the Named box, type wbemcore.exe, and then click Find Now.

  4. In the list of found files, double-click the Wbemcore.exe file. Follow the instructions on the screen to install WBEM.

  5. When the installation is complete, click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.

  6. In the Named box, type wbemuser.exe, and then click Find Now.

  7. In the list of found files, double-click the Wbemuser.exe file.

  8. Configure the permissions you want for the user or group in the domain or workgroup that you use to manage the Windows NT 4.0-based computer remotely.
