SAM Account Naming Standard Required by Dcpromo Tool

ID: Q230400

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you are attempting to add a domain controller to an existing Windows 2000 domain, the Dcpromo.exe tool may prompt for credentials. The administrator can supply the network credentials in the format of a User Principal Name, or UPN (for example, administrator@adomain.com). Dcpromo.exe allows this information until it tries to configure Active Directory, at which time the promotion process produces the following error message:

The operation failed due to insufficient network privileges. Type the user name and password of an account with sufficient privileges to create an additional domain controller to the DomainName domain.

CAUSE

When Dcpromo prompts for credentials, it requires the User Accounts Database (SAM) account naming standard. It expects to be supplied the user name, password, and domain name. It then passes the credentials in the form of Subdomain.Domain.com\User, or Domain\User.

RESOLUTION

Supply the credentials required by Dcpromo using the SAM account naming standard.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
