ID: Q230790

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

An administrator may be unable to determine the organizational unit (OU) in which a user account is located with the Find feature in the Active Directory Users and Computers Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you are not using the advanced features in MMC.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, first activate the advanced features in MMC:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.

  2. On the View menu, click Advanced Features.

After you activate the advanced features:
  1. Right-click the Domain Object icon in the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC snap-in, and then click Find.

  2. Type the user's name in the Name box. The Find dialog box defaults to Users, Contacts, and Groups.

  3. When the user is found, right-click the user object, and then click Properties. When the properties are displayed, click the Object tab for location information.

The Object path for the user is displayed at the top. This shows the OU in which a user's account is located.

If the correct option is set in the Find dialog box, this basic procedure applies to locating any object in Active Directory.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The Advanced Features option is used as a filter to prevent anyone but administrators or those with equivalent privileges from gaining access to the resulting information.
