.dns Files Remain in the DNS Folder After Active Directory Is Installed

ID: Q231359

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

SYMPTOMS

After you install Active Directory and integrate the DNS records into Active Directory, .dns files remain in the %SystemRoot%\System32\Dns folder. This occurs with both primary and secondary zones. This occurs only when the zone is integrated into Active Directory.

RESOLUTION

Manually move the .dns files to the %SystemRoot%\System32\Dns\Backup folder for safe keeping.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When a zone is created (either manually or with DNS Manager) on a DNS server, a corresponding zone file is created in the %SystemRoot%\System32\Dns folder for that server. After converting a primary or secondary zone to an Active Directory-integrated primary zone, the corresponding local zone file for that zone remains. These zone files are no longer parsed, so editing them does not result in updated zone information.
