SUMMARYWhen you are upgrading a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 server system that contains a software-based Stripe set with Parity (Raid 5) or Mirror (Raid 1) sets, the Fault Tolerant (FT) sets begin to regenerate during the upgrade process. You may notice increased disk activity on the drives that are part of the FT sets during Setup. MORE INFORMATION
This behavior is by design during the upgrade process. During the upgrade process, the disk key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Disk) is copied to a file named Migrate.inf. Later in the upgrade process, the FT information pertaining to these volumes is placed in a sector on the disks containing FT members. Using this enhanced method of storing FT information, the drives can be moved to a different Windows 2000 system where they are immediately recognized and usable without having to transfer or rebuild the disk key information.
After this information is placed on the disks, it causes affected FT volumes to be regenerated during the upgrade process. If this is of concern because of additional disk activity that may slow down the upgrade process, you can turn these drives off after Text-mode Setup finishes (before Setup reboots to continue with GUI-mode Setup), and then power the drives back on after the upgrade is finished. The disk key information will still be migrated the first time these disks are recognized by the upgraded system. This still results in the FT sets being regenerated.
