Unable to Use Locally Cached File When Connected to the Server

ID: Q231466

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you mark a file to use offline, you may continue to read and write to the file on the server instead of the locally cached file.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you are still connected to the server that contains the original file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

Due to Windows NT file semantics, the version of the file on the server is always opened for read or write operations, and then the locally cached version is synchronized with the server version. The file residing in the local cache is used only when the server version of the file is unavailable. Currently, the only way to force the use of the locally cached file is to work in an offline mode.
