SYMPTOMS
When you are upgrading from Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 Beta 3, you may receive the following error message:
STOP: 0x000000ce (0xF6782558, 0x00000000, 0xF6782558, 0x00000000)
DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATION

Note that the first address in the pairs (F678) may vary.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if there is a serial mouse connected to the computer during the upgrade process.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue:
- Boot without the mouse attached.
- Press CTRL+ESC to open the Start menu.
- Press UP ARROW until Settings is selected.
- Press RIGHT ARROW to select Control Panel, and then press ENTER.
- Use the arrow keys to select the System icon, and then press ENTER.
- Press RIGHT ARROW until the Hardware tab is selected.
- Press ALT+D to start Device Manager.
- Press ALT+V to open the View menu, press DOWN ARROW until Show hidden devices is selected, and then press ENTER.
- Press the TAB key, and then press DOWN ARROW to select Mice and other pointing devices.
- Press RIGHT ARROW to expand the group.
- Press DOWN ARROW to select the mouse (it may be listed as an unknown device.
- Press ENTER to open the device's properties.
- Press TAB three times, and then press RIGHT ARROW to select the Driver tab.
- Press ALT+P to start the Upgrade Device Driver wizard.
- Press ENTER, and then press ENTER.
- Press SPACEBAR to clear the Floppy disk drive check box, and then press ENTER. Windows should locate a serial mouse driver for you.
- When you are done, shut down the computer and connect your mouse.
- Start the computer and the mouse should work.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed
at the beginning of this article.
