"STOP 0x000000CE" in Sermouse.sys During Windows NT 4.0 Upgrade

SYMPTOMS

When you are upgrading from Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 Beta 3, you may receive the following error message:

STOP: 0x000000ce (0xF6782558, 0x00000000, 0xF6782558, 0x00000000)

DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATION
*** Address F6782558 base at F6782558, DateStamp 00000000 - Sermouse.sys
*** Address F6782558 base at F6782558, DateStamp 00000000 - Sermouse.sys
Note that the first address in the pairs (F678) may vary.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if there is a serial mouse connected to the computer during the upgrade process.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:

  1. Boot without the mouse attached.


  2. Press CTRL+ESC to open the Start menu.


  3. Press UP ARROW until Settings is selected.


  4. Press RIGHT ARROW to select Control Panel, and then press ENTER.


  5. Use the arrow keys to select the System icon, and then press ENTER.


  6. Press RIGHT ARROW until the Hardware tab is selected.


  7. Press ALT+D to start Device Manager.


  8. Press ALT+V to open the View menu, press DOWN ARROW until Show hidden devices is selected, and then press ENTER.


  9. Press the TAB key, and then press DOWN ARROW to select Mice and other pointing devices.


  10. Press RIGHT ARROW to expand the group.


  11. Press DOWN ARROW to select the mouse (it may be listed as an unknown device.


  12. Press ENTER to open the device's properties.


  13. Press TAB three times, and then press RIGHT ARROW to select the Driver tab.


  14. Press ALT+P to start the Upgrade Device Driver wizard.


  15. Press ENTER, and then press ENTER.


  16. Press SPACEBAR to clear the Floppy disk drive check box, and then press ENTER. Windows should locate a serial mouse driver for you.


  17. When you are done, shut down the computer and connect your mouse.


  18. Start the computer and the mouse should work.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
