SYMPTOMS

CAUSE

This problem can occur due to problems in Windows 2000.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, run the Add/Remove Hardware wizard to manually install and configure your COM ports:

NOTE: This process may not resolve every COM port-related issue. Your mainboard may require a BIOS update to resolve this problem.

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Hardware.

  2. Click Next, click Add/Troubleshoot a Device, and then click Next.

  3. After the Plug and Play detection process finishes, click Add a new device, and then click Next.

  4. Click No, I want to select the hardware from a list, and then click Next.

  5. In the Hardware types box, click Ports (COM & LPT), and then click Next.

  6. In the Manufacturers box, click Standard port types, in the Models box, click Communications Port, and then click Next.

  7. On the Resources tab, click Set configuration manually, re-configure resources (if needed) for the appropriate COM port, and then click Finish.

NOTE: After your COM ports are properly installed and functioning, you should be able to install and use devices that require COM ports.
