L2TP Session Does Not Disconnect Automatically

ID: Q232153

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SYMPTOMS

If Windows 2000 is configured to use Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) with automatic disconnection enabled, Windows may not drop the L2TP session even when no data is being transferred.

CAUSE

A "keep-alive" mechanism is used by L2TP to differentiate tunnel outages from extended periods of no control or data activity. This is accomplished by injecting "Hello" control messages into the control stream every 60 seconds.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
