Cluster Server DFS Root Resource Does Not Pass Status Check

ID: Q232478

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

SYMPTOMS

When you are reviewing a system event log on a node in a server cluster, the following error messages may appear even though no resource problems appear in Cluster Administrator:

Event id: 1055
Source: ClusSvc
Type: Error
Description: Cluster File Share resource 'sharename' has failed a status check. The error code is 1355.

Event id: 1069
Source: ClusSvc
Type: Error
Description: Cluster resource 'sharename' failed.

CAUSE

If the file share resource indicated by "sharename" is configured as a DFS Root in its advanced options, these error messages could indicate that the DFS service has been stopped on the node in the server cluster while the cluster resource was online on that node. The service could have been stopped by manual intervention or by a problem with the service.

The file share resource configured as a DFS Root would be shown in a failed condition in Cluster Administrator if it had been configured to not restart the resource after a failure, or if the restart threshold of the resource has been exceeded. If this is configured to restart (which is the default behavior) and the restart threshold of the resource has not been exceeded, the system event log logs these events and then the cluster would tries to bring the resource online again, trying to restart the DFS service if it is found to not be started.

RESOLUTION

No immediate recovery action is required if the resource is showing online in Cluster Administrator. If the DFS service was not stopped by manual intervention, there should be events with the source DFS that have more information about why the service was stopped to help troubleshoot the service.

If the file share resource is in a failed state in Cluster Administrator, right-click the resource in Cluster Administrator and choose to bring it online. This will attempt to start the DFS service. If it still fails, more detailed events should be logged in the system event log from DFS or ClusSvc. View these for a more complete course of action.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
