SUMMARY

This article describes the security settings applied when you install Windows 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows 2000 default security settings are only applied during a clean installation of Windows. If you upgrade from an earlier version of Windows NT to Windows 2000 your existing security settings are not modified. Also, you must install Windows 2000 onto an NTFS file system in order for the default file system ACLs to be applied.

To apply the default Windows 2000 security settings, follow these steps:

  1. Log on to your computer as an administrator.

  2. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.

  3. Type cd\<windir>\security\templates where <windir> is the folder in which Windows is installed, and then press ENTER.

  4. Type the appropriate command for your version of Windows, and then press ENTER:

  5. Windows 2000 Professional

    secedit /configure /cfg basicwk.inf /db basicwk.sdb /log basicwk.log /verbose

    Windows 2000 Server

    secedit /configure /cfg basicsv.inf /db basicsv.sdb /log basicsv.log /verbose
NOTE: The basic configuration files apply all default security settings except for User Rights and membership of the Users and Power Users groups. You may need to add the Interactive Users group to the Power Users group after you apply the basic template.
