User Accounts Migrate Only for the Last Logged On User

ID: Q232859

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SUMMARY

When you upgrade from Windows 95/98 to Windows 2000, the Windows Setup program searches for user and computer account objects only for the last user that was logged on to the computer.

MORE INFORMATION

This is by design. Windows 95/98 keeps only the domain of the last logged on user in the registry.

Windows 2000 requires a computer account object to participate in a domain and the Windows 2000 computer cannot reside in two different domains at the same time. If there are computers in your organization that are used on two different domains, determine which account you want to use to perform the upgrade. Any user settings for a different domain are migrated to local user accounts. You can copy the other user account profile settings from another Windows 2000 computer. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the computer that has the profile you want to copy, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

  2. On the User Profiles tab, click the profile you want to copy, and then click Copy To

  3. In the Copy Profile To box, type the name of the computer to which you want to copy the profile, and then click OK.
