Err Msg: The File \\Servername Cannot Be Found

SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a shortcut to a server on your network, you may receive the following error message:

The file \\<servername> cannot be found.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you do not log on to the network or domain that contains the server to which you want to connect.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type \\<servername>, where <servername> is the name of the server to which you want to connect.


  2. Click OK, type your user name and password, and then click OK.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
