Telnet Server Does Not Work After Upgrading to Windows 2000

ID: Q233226

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

Telnet Server may not work after you upgrade from Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with Services for UNIX (SFU) installed to Windows 2000.

CAUSE

Currently, Windows 2000 servers are limited to two threads for the Telnet Server service. The registry shows that there can be up to 63 connections. Even if you change the registry, there is no effect because of the hard-coded limit.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, reinstall SFU after upgrading to Windows 2000.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
