SUMMARY

When you use the RIPrep tool with the Remote Installation Service (RIS) to install workstations, the target computer's hard disk is formatted with the NTFS file system using the full size of the drive.

This article describes how to leave part of the disk unformatted, so that it can be partitioned once the client has been set up.

To use this method, prepare a client computer with the system/boot volume size and all the programs you want for the target computers.

NOTE: All clients must have a drive that is at least equal to or larger than the size of the drive in the original imaged system.

When the image system is configured correctly, connect to the Servername\Reminst share. In the Admin\I386 folder, run the Riprep.exe tool (follow the instructions on the screen). Once the tool is finished, go to the RIS server on which the image is stored and edit the following template file:

Remoteinstall\Setup\Language\Images\Folder_name\I386\Templates\Riprep.sif

The Riprep.sif file is the answer file for the image. Locate the following line:

UseWholeDisk = yes

Change this line to read:

UseWholeDisk = no

After you make this change, save the file. Setting this value stops the Setup program from extending the volume to the end of the drive.
