Imported Volume Is Displayed with "Failed" Status in Windows 2000 Professional

ID: Q235264

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SYMPTOMS

When you import foreign volumes into Windows 2000 Professional, some volumes may be displayed with a "failed" status and cannot be reactivated.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the volume being imported is configured as a type not supported by Windows 2000 Professional.

For example, a volume configured as a Mirror or Raid-5 set in Windows 2000 Server appears with "failed" status after it is imported in Windows 2000 Professional. Windows 2000 Professional does not support software disk mirroring or RAID-5 fault tolerant sets and cannot activate the imported volume.
