Err Msg: Error 633 Your Modem May Not Have Been Present or May Have Been Turned Off...

SYMPTOMS

When you use Dial-Up Networking with a plug and play modem, you may receive the following error message:

Error 633
Your modem may not have been present or may have been turned off at startup. Re-attach or turn on your modem, then use Device Manager to scan for new hardware.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if the plug and play modem was turned off when you started the computer.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, turn on the modem, and then scan for new hardware in Device Manager or restart the computer.


STATUS

This issue is by design. Windows does not automatically poll the serial port to check for plug and play devices.
