Netdiag Resource Kit Tool Is Not Cluster Aware

ID: Q236328

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Netdiag tool, DNS errors may be reported on cluster servers that have resource groups online that contain Internet Protocol (IP) objects.

CAUSE

Netdiag does not detect that the TCP/IP address of a virtual server is not registered under the computer name.

MORE INFORMATION

For example, the host name of the cluster server is SERVER1 and the IP address is 131.1.1.11. There are also two resource groups with IP addresses of 131.1.1.15 and 131.1.1.17 online to this server. The following error message is displayed in the Netdiag tool output:

    Testing DNS
      Interface {EC60090B-77E8-4ADF-BE4D-F011042AA58E}
        DNS Domain: testdomain.com
        DNS Servers: 131.1.1.2
        IP Address: 131.1.1.15 131.1.1.17 131.1.1.11
Expected registration with PDN (primary DNS domain name):
          Hostname: SERVER1.testdomain.com.
          Authoritative zone: testdomain.com.
          Primary DNS server: dns.testdomain.com 131.1.1.2
          Authoritative NS:131.1.1.2
      Verify DNS registration:
        Name: SERVER1.testdomain.com
        Expected IP: 131.1.1.15 131.1.1.17 131.1.1.11
          Server 131.1.1.2: ERROR_NO_MATCH
Missing IP from DNS: 131.1.1.15 131.1.1.17
[FATAL]: The DNS registration for SERVER1.testdomain.com is incorrect on all DNS servers.
Check the DNS registration for DCs entries on DNS server 131.1.1.2

********** * ********** * ********** * ********** * ********** *
* CHECK NAME SERVER1.testdomain.com. on DNS server 131.1.1.2

To verify that you can ignore this error message, re-run the Netdiag test when no resource groups are online on the cluster server. Netdiag does not report DNS errors then.
