Working with Transforms for Assigned or Published Programs in Active Directory

ID: Q236943

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SUMMARY

When you are using Active Directory to assign or publish programs, you can update deployed software. With standard MSI files, you can apply a patch (.msp) file and redeploy the software by using the Software Installation section in the Group Policy Microsoft Management Console (MMC). However, a transform (.mst) file must be handled differently and does not allow for redeployment.

MORE INFORMATION

If you have an updated transform, you must first remove the previous MSI file and transform deployment in Active Directory. Then, you must create a new deployment using the Software Installation section in the Group Policy MMC. The new transform must be applied to this new package during deployment. Transforms do not allow for the updating of currently deployed packages. They must be applied to a package during deployment.

For more information about modifying transforms, see the Windows 2000 Software Development Kit.
