Windows 2000 May Stop Responding When You Attempt to Run Adaptec's Easy CD Creator

SYMPTOMS

Windows 2000 may stop responding (hang) at the splash screen or may not start properly or exhibit a STOP error message when you attempt to run Adaptec's Easy CD Creator versions 3.5b or DirectCD 3.0 and earlier.


CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Easy CD Creator (versions 3.5b or earlier), and Aspi32.sys (versions 4.01 and earlier) and its Cdr4vsd.sys driver that is loaded during boot, are not compatible with Windows 2000.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, boot into the Recovery Console and log on to the Windows 2000-based computer that is exhibiting the problem using the following steps:

  1. Start your computer with the Windows 2000 Setup disks, or with the Windows 2000 CD-ROM if your computer supports starting from CD-ROM.


  2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair, and then press C to start the Recovery Console.

  4. After you log on to your computer, from the the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder at the command console, type disable cdr4vsd, and then restart into Windows 2000.


  5. After you start Windows 2000, move past the error message on Aspi32.sys, and uninstall Easy CD Creator and DirectCD.

Adaptec has an updated Cdr4vsd.sys driver and a beta software update for Easy CD Creator version 3.5c. There is also additional information about running Easy CD Creator on Windows 2000 at the aforementioned Adaptec Web site. DirectCD is not currently supported in Windows 2000. Installing DirectCD may cause the computer to hang.

NOTE: Adaptec DirectCD version 3.00 and earlier are not compatible with Windows 2000. Check the following Web site for current versions of Easy CD Creator and DirectCD that are compatible with Windows 2000:
