Domain User Account Expiration Date Appears Different When Viewed Using Net.exe and User Manager

ID: Q237584

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you configure a user account expiration date using the Net.exe utility and then view the information using the User Manager for Domains tool, the account expiration date does not appear to be the same.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the User Manager for Domains tool displays the account expiration date through the date where the user account is still valid, and the Net.exe utility displays the account expiration date as the date the account can no longer be used. Because of this, it may appear as if the account expiration date is different when viewed using these tools, when they are actually the same date.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The User Manager for Domains tool sets the account expiration date to the end of the day you enter. For example, if you configure the account expiration date to be 12/01/99, the account expires at the end of 12/01/99, at midnight. When you view the account expiration date information using the Net.exe utility, the account expiration date displays 12/02/99 12am, which is the same as 12/01/99 at midnight.

The Net.exe utility sets the account expiration date to midnight of the day before the date you enter. For example, if you add a new domain user by using the net user username password /expire:12/01/99 /add command at a command prompt, and then using the net user username command to view the user account information, the account expiration date is set to expire on 12/01/99 at 12am. The User Manager for Domains tool shows this user account expires at the end of 11/30/99, which is actually the same date.
