"Cannot Set Permissions on <Filename>" During Setup Loading a Riprep Image

ID: Q237692

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you are using Remote Installation Service (RIS) to install a Riprep.exe image of Windows 2000 on a client computer, you may receive the following error message during the text-mode portion of Setup:

Cannot set permissions on filename

CAUSE

When a Riprep image is copied to a RIS server, existing NTFS file and folder permissions are kept by creating an alternate NTFS data stream named $SYSPREP on the file or folder. The file or folder attributes and security information are kept in this alternate data stream so that they can be reapplied during subsequent installations.

If the alternate data stream transmission that contains the file or folder permissions become corrupted or damaged, Setup cannot reapply the permissions and displays the error message.

RESOLUTION

Because this behavior is most likely caused by file corruption on the RIS server, it is probably best to re-create the image or run the chkdsk /f command against the RIS volume on which the image is stored to determine if there is any additional corruption. You can also try one of the following methods:

  • After receiving the error message, choose to skip the file during the copy phase. If you allow text-mode Setup to continue, the file is copied, but any custom attributes or permissions are lost.

  • Delete the existing file on the server and replace it with one from the computer that was used to create the image. This replaces the file without using the alternate data stream, so any permissions or attributes placed on the file are not applied.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
