SYMPTOMSIf your external modem is not present during Windows 2000 startup (for example, the modem is turned off), you may not be able to use the modem in Windows 2000 after you turn it on or reconnect it. Windows reports that the device is working correctly, but when you try to use it you may receive an error message stating that the device is not present. For example, you may receive the following error message: The Fax tool may report the device status as unknown, and you may be unable to send faxes. RESOLUTIONTo use the modem again, restart the computer with the modem turned on or connected. Or, use the following method:
