  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

If your external modem is not present during Windows 2000 startup (for example, the modem is turned off), you may not be able to use the modem in Windows 2000 after you turn it on or reconnect it. Windows reports that the device is working correctly, but when you try to use it you may receive an error message stating that the device is not present. For example, you may receive the following error message:

Error 633. The modem is already in use or not configured for dialing out.
The Fax tool may report the device status as unknown, and you may be unable to send faxes.

RESOLUTION

To use the modem again, restart the computer with the modem turned on or connected. Or, use the following method:

  1. With the external modem available, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.

  2. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

  3. Right-click Modems, and then click Scan for hardware changes. You should see a dialog box indicating a scan.

After you follow the steps, the modem is available for use.
