Terminal Services May Not Warn About Changing to Install Mode to Install Programs

When you place a CD-ROM in a computer that is running Terminal Services and is configured to start or play CD-ROMs automatically, you should see a dialog box reminding you to install the program by using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel. This method places Windows in Install mode.

If a program other than Setup.exe or Install.exe starts from the CD-ROM automatically, the dialog box does not appear and the installation appears to be successful. However, the installation may not be successful because Windows is not in Install mode. Install mode allows for all the registry changes to be replicated to every user. If Install mode is not used, only the current user has the needed settings.

Terminal Services uses a special installation mode for installing programs for multiple-user use. This mode is activated by installing a program by using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, or by using the change user /install command at a command prompt. If you use this command, you should return to normal Execution mode by using the change user /execute command after installing the program.
