Invalid Port Name Error Message When You Try to Use an HTTP Address for a Local Printer Port

SYMPTOMS

When you try to add a local printer by using the Add Printer Wizard and specifying a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) address for the new printer port, you may receive an error message stating you cannot connect to the port.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Add Printer Wizard does not recognize HTTP addresses. Printers added using the Add Printer Wizard must be specified by a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) name such as \\server name\print share name, where server name is the appropriate server name and print share name is the appropriate print share name.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, add a Web-based printer by using your Web browser program to view the HTTP address, and then choose to connect to the printer. Note that the Internet Printer option on the Network Printer tab is to support future third-party printer ports.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
