Default Outlook Express Configuration Downloads and Removes Existing POP3 E-mail Messages

ID: Q240181

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SUMMARY

The first time you start Microsoft Outlook Express, the Internet Connection Wizard guides you through the configuration of the program to connect to your e-mail server. If your e-mail server is a POP3 mail provider, all messages currently contained on the server are downloaded to the Outlook Express Inbox and removed from the server.

MORE INFORMATION

When you configure Outlook Express for the first time, either disconnect the phone line before you start Outlook Express or configure Microsoft Internet Explorer to work offline so that messages are not removed from the e-mail server.

NOTE: This action also forces Outlook Express to work offline.

If you want to configure Outlook Express to leave e-mail messages on the POP3 server, use the following steps:

  1. Start Outlook Express.

  2. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.

  3. In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click Mail.

  4. Click an existing account, and then click Properties.

  5. On the Advanced tab in the Delivery section, click to select the Leave copy of messages on server check box.

  6. Click Apply, and then click OK.
