Cannot Make NetWare Server Folders Available Offline

ID: Q240391

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

SYMPTOMS

When you select Novell NetWare folders on the network, the Make Available Offline command does not appear on the File menu in Windows Explorer. Instead, the Map Network Drive command appears. Therefore, files that reside on NetWare servers cannot be made available offline.

CAUSE

Windows 2000 uses the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol; NetWare uses Netware Core Protocol (NCP). Offline files work only with SMB servers; they do not work with NCP servers.

RESOLUTION

You can use Gateway Services for NetWare (GSNW) to allow NetWare files to be made available for offline use.
