DNS Global Catalog Query on a Windows 2000-Based DNS Server

SYMPTOMS

When you issue a Domain Name System (DNS) Global Catalog query on a Windows 2000-based DNS server for SRV records with Resource Record Data pointing to another zone on another server, the response to the SRV query may seem inconsistent. As the number of SRV records increases, the number of host records returned decreases (sometimes, until no host record are returned).

CAUSE

The basic pattern or behavior is that a recursive query is launched by the client to find one and only one additional data record.

Windows 2000 holds up a valid response to make sure there is at least one address to which a client program can resolve. When it does resolve, the operation is complete. Note that additional data is just that: additional data, not an answer. The client program can always query for this data. However, because there are limitations based on the limitations in packet size, there can be cases in which only a fraction of the additional records are included, even if you wanted to include them.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
