Computer with Integrated Video Adapter Cannot Use Multiple Monitors with VGA-Enabled Secondary Adapter

ID: Q240781

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

SYMPTOMS

If your computer has an integrated video adapter, when you try to configure the multiple monitor feature to use a VGA enabled secondary display, you may be unable to do so.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your integrated video adapter is not the VGA device. To use an integrated video adapter with the multiple monitor feature, the integrated video adapter must be the VGA device. Some computers with an integrated video adapter cannot activate the integrated video adapter when a VGA-capable Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) video adapter is also present.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you must use hardware VGA-disabled video adapters as secondary adapters so that your integrated video adapter performs a Power On Self-Test (POST) and then acts as the VGA display.

MORE INFORMATION

Some computers have integrated video adapters with Windows 2000 drivers capable of functioning as secondary adapters with add-in PCI VGA displays. Note that there are known problems with these configurations. Microsoft recommends you contact your computer manufacturer for a possible updated system Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) to resolve this, or use hardware VGA-disabled video adapters as secondary adapters as noted in the RESOLUTION section. Also, some video adapters have jumpers on the card you can use to disable the VGA, and other adapters may use the video driver to perform this function.
