Total Paging File Size Is Reported Larger Than Defined Size

ID: Q240908

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you view the virtual memory settings (by clicking the Advanced tab in System properties and then clicking Performance Options) after you add a paging file to another drive and then remove the paging file from the original drive, the total paging file size may be reported from both drives, including the paging file you removed.

For example, if you add a 300-megabyte (MB) paging file to drive D and then remove the original 200-MB paging file from drive C, the total paging file size is reported as 300 MB in the Virtual Memory dialog box. However, when you click OK, the total paging file size is reported as 500 MB in the Performance Options dialog box.

CAUSE

The total paging file size is calculated from currently allocated paging files in use at the current time. Because the computer has not yet been restarted, the original paging file is still in use, even though it is not displayed in the Virtual Memory dialog box.

RESOLUTION

To cause the correct total paging file size to be displayed, restart the computer.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
