Option to Share May Not Be Available After Stopping the Server Service

ID: Q241043

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

In certain situations, it may be necessary to stop the Server service on your computer. This can be done for security reasons, as well as for troubleshooting. Attempting to create a share while the service is stopped does not work. Attempting to create the share by right-clicking and using the context menu may generate the following error message:

An error occurred while trying to share share name. The Server service is not started. The shared resource was not created at this time.
Attempting to create a share by using the "net share" command generates an error message prompting the administrator to start the server service. Also, after you receive the error message, the option to share may no longer be available by right-clicking to use the context menu.

CAUSE

This problem occurs and this option is unavailable because the right-click context menu is not a valid option for the current state of the computer. Immediately after restarting the Server service, the windows displaying the objects to be shared will not have been refreshed. Instead, they will continue to show the options available for the computer when the Server service was not running.

RESOLUTION

To return the sharing functionality to the right-click context menu and the Sharing tab in the Properties dialog box, click Refresh on the View menu, press F5 in the active window, or log off and then log on.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
