Cannot Connect to a Windows 2000 Server with Metaframe 1.8a RC1

ID: Q241977

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

After you install Citrix Metaframe 1.8a RC1 on a computer running Windows 2000 RC2, no Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) or ICA connections can be made. The RDP client returns the following error message:

The client could not connect to the Terminal server. The server may be too busy. Please try connecting later.
The ICA client returns the following error message:
Cannot connect to the Citrix server:
The Citrix Server you have selected is not accepting connections.
Attempts to make a Telnet connection to TCP ports 3389 (the RDP listening port) and 1494 (the ICA listening port) also do not work.

CAUSE

This behavior is caused by stack verification and signing. Stack verification and signing was introduced in RC2 to prevent unauthorized use of unapproved protocol stacks and to avoid problems such as corrupted or replaced protocol drivers. Metaframe 1.8a RC1 was released before the inclusion of stack verification and signing. The unsigned ICA drivers are the cause of this problem.

WORKAROUND

The only workaround is to uninstall Metaframe. This allows the Windows 2000 server to resume accepting RDP connections.

MORE INFORMATION

Future versions of Metaframe are expected to include signed drivers. For further information about the availability of updated versions, please contact Citrix.
