BNC Connection Is Not Detected When Network Adapter Is Set to Autodetect Mode

ID: Q242005

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

Network adapters typically have either BNC, AUI or twisted pair connectors. The software drivers for many adapters can automatically detect which connector type is being used. However, in many cases it only detects twisted pair type connections and may be unable to detect BNC or coaxial cable type connections.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if Windows 2000 does not correctly detect that the BNC connector type is being used.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem if you are using a BNC or coax connection on a network adapter that has other media type connections, configure the adapter to specifically use BNC instead of using the automatic detection feature. Note that this setting is usually found in the properties for the network adapter in Device Manager.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Note that the automatic detection feature may correctly detect that you are using a BNC or coaxial cable type connection, and if it does, you do not need to perform the steps listed in this article.
