Error Message: "Requested Operation Is Not Supported" When Trying to Add a Mirror Volume

SYMPTOMS

When you try to add a mirror volume to a hard disk that contains three or more existing volumes, you may receive the following pop-up error message:

Logical Disk Manager

Requested operation is not supported.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the destination dynamic disk was upgraded from a BASIC disk that contained three or more pre-existing partitions that are now hard-linked in the Logical Disk Manager (LDM) Dynamic disks database. This condition is erroneously preventing the mirroring operation from being supported.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, perform one of the following:

• When establishing the mirror, select another dynamic volume that has enough unallocated free space.



• Backup one of the existing simple volumes on the dynamic disk to which you are trying to mirror. Delete the volume, re-create the volume, and then restore from the backup copy. This frees up a hard-linked entry in the LDM database and allows the original mirroring operation to succeed.



• Create a mirror volume in the same space as before, however, create the mirror in the opposite direction. To do this:
  
  
  1. Create a new simple volume the same size as the volume you want to mirror using the unallocated space on the original dynamic disk.
  
  
  
  2. Back up and restore the data from the original volume to the newly created simple volume.
  
  
  
  3. Delete the original simple volume, which creates unallocated free space.
  
  
  
  4. Add a mirror to the new simple volume using the free space created by deleting the simple volume on the original disk.
  
  
  
  NOTE: All of the methods mentioned above assume the other dynamic disk used as a target does not also contain three or more hard-linked partitions. Pure dynamic disks, ones created with no pre-existing partition, do not exhibit this problem and have no mirroring limitations.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
