Setup Does Not Continue If Repair Console Is Installed During Setup Process

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SUMMARY

If you install Recovery Console while an installation of Windows 2000 is in progress, you cannot continue with the installation. Installing Recovery Console while the other installation is in progress deletes necessary files from the $win_nt$.~bt folder. This does not allow the existing Setup process to be completed. You can install Recovery Console from within another operating system if you experience a problem that prevents Setup from continuing.

If you installed Windows 2000 on a second volume and formatted the volume using the NTFS file system during Setup, and Microsoft Windows NT, Microsoft Windows 95, or Microsoft Windows 98 is installed on the first volume, you can boot the previous version of Windows NT, Windows 95, or Windows 98, and then install Recovery Console on the local hard disk to gain access to the NTFS partition. Doing this allows you to gain access to the NTFS partition, but it could cause problems with the Windows 2000 installation that is in process.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior does not occur if you boot with the Windows 2000 CD-ROM or use the four boot floppy disks to start Recovery Console. Booting directly from the four boot floppy disks or the Windows 2000 CD-ROM to start Recovery Console does not require that files be written to the drive. Therefore, the Setup files are not replaced and are available after you make repairs. It may then be possible to resume Setup.

The reasons to boot to Recovery Console might include running Chkdsk to repair drive corruption, running Fixboot to fix a boot sector problem, or running Fixmbr to fix the Master Boot Record (MBR).
