Error Message: "Setup Has Encountered an Error and Cannot Continue (0x5, 0x1, 0, 0)" During Windows 2000 Setup

SYMPTOMS

When you try to perform a fresh installation of Windows 2000 on a disk drive that was converted to dynamic, you may receive the following error message containing one of the (enclosed) status codes:

   Setup has encountered an error and cannot continue.

   Contact technical support for assistance. The following
   status will assist them in diagnosing the problem.

   (0x5, 0x1, 0, 0)  
   
   -or-  

   (0x5, 0x1, 0x3, 0)

   Setup cannot continue. To quite setup, press F3. 

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the disk's partition table already contains four type 0x42 (dynamic) partitions. During Setup, if unallocated free space is still available on the disk and then selected, Setup tries to create another partition, which is not allowed.

NOTE: Dynamic disks support more that four partitions, however, they are managed differently than basic disks by keeping partitioning information in a private region at the end of the disk. Installing Windows 2000 to dynamic disks is not fully supported.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install Windows 2000 by selecting another pre-existing partition or free space on a basic disk.
